illusory surface

This piece explores primary aspects of complex curvature through the careful composition of many straight lines, which in aggregation, create the illusion of a ruled surface.

The piece adopts the formal qualities of a four sided tensegrity tetrahedron. Two diametrically opposed semicircular acrylic arms provide a rigid substructure for threading. Fishing line is then strung from the center of this substructure in a circular motion around its center, propogating outward. The result is an implied surface whose curvature appears to change based on the angle at which the object is viewed.
