Complex Polyhedral box

Following the work of artist Joel Shapiro, this project focused on the construction of a complex polyhedral box. While the form may appear simple, its construction is anything but. The irregularity of the shape results in mitered edges that are deceptively difficult to fabricate and assemble. The goal of this exercise was to generate a form with gap free joint conditions, and produce a form as close to a monolithic object as possible.

The final piece was constructed using half inch Baltic Birch plywood sheets. Each face of the polyhedron was milled on a CNC router and the the pieces were assembled using wood glue. Joint conditions were constrained to within a very small margin of error.
